The comfort, charm, and craftsmanship of the guayabera has resulted in many cultures laying claim to the origin of this universally admired article of clothing. The guayabera has taken many forms over the centuries from military
uniforms to wedding attire to the common man’s staple.

Some say the guayabera originated in the Philippines prior to the Spaniards’ arrival, who then introduced the shirt to their colonies in Mexico and Latin America. Others attribute it to fieldworkers in the countryside of Cuba and across the Caribbean who needed a lightweight shirt with multiple pockets able to hold their belongings.

Others believe they were inspired by the uniforms of Spanish soldiers. These eventually made their way to Mexico, most prominently in the Yucatan, where the front embroidery was embellished soon became widely popular.

Regardless of the origin, the guayabera can been seen in formal and informal settings across much of Latin America and more recently in the southern and southwestern United States. Made for lightweight comfort and style, they are always worn untucked and are perfectly suited for the beach, nights out, weddings, work or play.
